Climate-related Financial Disclosures for the Public Sector

Overview

Adaptive Futures is pioneering the ways in which United States government entities will disclose climate-related financial risks to tax payers, credit rating agencies and other stakeholders. Inspired by the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), Adaptive Futures, in partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), created a concept for United States’ government entities to use in reporting climate-related financial risks.

REDUCING Federal Suppliers’ Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Overview

On October 9, 2009, President Obama signed Executive Order 13514, which called on Federal agencies to “establish an integrated strategy towards sustainability in the Federal Government and to make reduction of greenhouse gas emissions a priority for federal agencies.” As part of this Executive Order, agencies were required to set baselines and targets for their scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; furthermore, the Order specifically directed the General Services Administration (GSA), in coordination with other key agencies, to assess the feasibility of requiring suppliers to measure and reduce their GHG emissions.

Using Scenario Analysis for Climate Risk Management Planning

Overview

The General Services Administration (GSA) is increasingly focused on ensuring that federal agencies are proactive in preparing to address climate change risks. The Agency tasked its Climate Change Adaptation Team (Team) with advancing organizational readiness for climate change across the federal government. In response, the team hosted a series of climate preparedness workshops for federal stakeholders to review the impacts of potential climate scenarios on existing mission-related infrastructure. These day-long sessions exceeded the expectations of the GSA and its federal partners, and it earned the 2013 GreenGov Presidential Award, which celebrates extraordinary achievement in the pursuit of President Obama’s challenge to reduce energy use and carbon pollution, curb waste, and save taxpayer dollars.
